Ethereum was created in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin, a Russian-Canadian programmer and cryptocurrency researcher. He first proposed Ethereum in late 2013 as a platform to enable decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts on the blockchain. Ethereum is now the second most popular cryptocurrency platform after Bitcoin.
